Everyone is benchmarking GPT-6 Astra. Far fewer people are asking what kind of network was required to connect a six-figure GPU cluster.

The answer is more complicated than simply saying “100,000 GPUs equals 100,000 800G optical modules.”

The GPU count is public. The exact hardware mix and optical bill of materials are not.

To understand what Astra-scale AI infrastructure may demand from optical interconnects, we need to separate what OpenAI and 100,000 Systems

Last Thursday, OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra. A few days later, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang posted about the launch, writing that Astra had been trained on approximately “100K+” NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72 and that another 400,000 GPUs were coming online.

The wording created some confusion because “NVL72” describes a rack-scale system containing 72 Blackwell GPUs, not an individual GPU.

OpenAI’s own briefing provides the clearest answer.

Aidan Clark, OpenAI’s vice president of research, told reporters that Astra represented the company’s largest training run by far and marked the first time OpenAI had pretrained a model on more than 100,000 GPUs at its Stargate site in Texas.

So the headline number should be interpreted as:

100,000+ GPUs — not 100,000 NVL72 racks.

If all 100,000 GPUs were mapped onto fully populated 72-GPU NVL72 systems, the theoretical equivalent would be:

100,000 ÷ 72 ≈ 1,389 NVL72 racks

or roughly 1,400 full NVL72 racks.

That should be treated as a rack-equivalent calculation, not a confirmed physical rack count. OpenAI has not publicly disclosed the exact combination of GB200, GB300, or other Grace Blackwell systems used in the Astra training cluster.

Astra Training Scale

Metric

Approximate Scale

GPUs used for Astra pretraining

100,000+

Full NVL72 rack equivalent

~1,400

GPUs per NVL72 rack

72

Additional GPUs referenced by Jensen Huang

400,000

Figure 1. Optical transceivers can be installed in the ConnectX or BlueField network interfaces used to connect the rack to external compute, storage, and management networks.

The distinction is:

NVLink scale-up fabric inside the rack: copper

Scale-out compute fabric between racks: high-speed network interfaces that may use optical transceivers

Copper makes sense for the short distances inside a rack because it avoids unnecessary electrical-to-optical conversion, while offering extremely high bandwidth and relatively low power for short-reach connections.

Once traffic has to leave the rack and travel through the larger AI cluster, optical connectivity becomes increasingly important because fiber supports longer reach, high port density, and large-scale network topologies more efficiently.

The Boundary That Matters

Intra-rack GPU scale-up: NVLink over passive copper infrastructure.

Inter-rack GPU scale-out: ConnectX network interfaces connected through InfiniBand or Ethernet fabrics, typically using high-speed optical links in large deployments.

This boundary is important today, but it should not be treated as permanent. Technologies such as co-packaged optics, near-package optics, and optical I/O may eventually move optical connectivity closer to the compute package.

Outside the Rack — About One Node-Side Network Port per GPU

This is where the original “one GPU, one optical module” NVIDIA H100 GPUs.

During a 54-day snapshot of pretraining, the cluster experienced:

466 total job cluster.

However, it would be incorrect simply to multiply Meta’s failure rate by 6.1.

Astra uses a different hardware generation, networking topology, software stack, operating environment, failure-management system, and potentially different checkpointing strategies.

What Meta’s data demonstrates is something more general:

As synchronous GPU clusters become larger, component reliability and automated fault recovery become increasingly important.

A single component can have excellent individual reliability while failures somewhere in a six-figure component fleet occur regularly.

That is why large AI clusters invest heavily in:

<ul However, there is not enough public evidence to conclude that previous models autonomously repaired individual network or hardware failures “within seconds.”

The broader point still stands: operating a six-figure GPU cluster requires far more automation than simply installing GPUs and launching a training job.

Where Optical Transceivers Actually Sit in a Training Cluster

Optical transceivers are not used for the highest-bandwidth GPU-to-GPU communication inside an NVL72 rack.

That job belongs to NVLink.

NVIDIA’s GB200 NVL72 creates a 72-GPU NVLink domain with extremely high-bandwidth, low-latency communication inside the rack using NVLink switches and passive copper connectivity.

Optical interconnect becomes critical when the system has to scale out beyond a single rack.

For GB200:

GPU → ConnectX-7 400G → compute fabric

For GB300:

GPU → ConnectX-8 800G → 2 × 400G compute planes

Beyond the node-to-leaf connection, more optical modules appear in:

Leaf-to-spine connections

Spine-to-super-spine links at larger scale

Storage networks

Frontend or converged networks

In-band management networks

Support-server connections

Data-center interconnect

This is why the optical opportunity created by AI infrastructure cannot be calculated simply by multiplying GPU shipments by one.

The GPU count provides a useful starting point for estimating node-side high-speed ports.

The complete optical BOM depends on the entire fabric.

And reliability matters as much as quantity.

An optical module is not simply a line item in a BOM. It is part of a synchronous distributed system in which signal integrity, thermal performance, bit-error rate, interoperability, link stability, and failure recovery can directly influence cluster utilization.

At 100,000-GPU scale, even a small reduction in link reliability can translate into a meaningful operational impact.

At the same time, it would be an overstatement to claim that every failed optical module automatically stalls the entire cluster. Modern AI fabrics and training software are designed to isolate, reroute, checkpoint, and recover from many types of failures.

The real engineering challenge is therefore not:

“Can an optical module fail?”

It is:

“Can the system detect, isolate, and recover from that failure quickly enough to keep expensive GPUs productive?”

Frequently Asked Questions

How many optical transceivers did GPT-6 Astra actually use?

The exact number has not been publicly disclosed.

OpenAI confirmed that Astra was pretrained on more than 100,000 GPUs. In current NVIDIA NVL72 reference architectures, there is approximately one high-speed scale-out network port per GPU.

Therefore, if every GPU-facing scale-out connection used a discrete pluggable optical transceiver, the node side alone could require roughly 100,000 optical modules.

However, they should not automatically be described as 800G modules.

GB200 NVL72 uses ConnectX-7 400G compute-network ports, while GB300 NVL72 uses ConnectX-8 800G ports.
