What is 10G BIDI SFP+ optical module?


The 10G BIDI SFP+ optical module is an optical module using WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) bidirectional transmission technology, which realizes bidirectional transmission in the optical channel on one optical fiber at the same time. The 10G BIDI SFP+ optical module has only one port and transmits and receives signals on one optical cable through an integrated bidirectional coupler. Therefore, it must be used in pairs.


How does the 10G BIDI SFP+ optical module work?

To work efficiently, 10G BIDI SFP+ optical modules must be used in pairs, enabling bidirectional data transmission by tuning the duplexer to match the desired wavelengths of the transmitter and receiver. The rate of a 10G BIDI SFP+ optical module is up to 10.7Gbps.


The most obvious advantage of a 10G BIDI SFP+ optical module is to reduce the cost of optical fiber cabling infrastructure. The 10G BIDI SFP+ optical module cuts the number of ports on the fiber patch cord panel, reduces the footprint of the tray dedicated to fiber management, and reduces the number of fiber optic cables that need to be used.

Introduction of 10G SFP+ BiDi ZR

SFP+ is a form factor, and BiDi refers to single-fiber bidirectional, that is, bidirectional transmission can be realized on one optical fiber. ZR stands for Ze best Range, which is "the longest distance". It supports the transmission of 1550nm wavelength on single-mode fiber, and the transmission distance can reach 80km. It was Cisco that originally introduced a private 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard, not within the physical layer protocol of EEE 802.3ae standard, which later transferred to the form of MSA with more and more manufacturers participating.


The transmitter part of the 10G SFP+ BiDi ZR optical module adopts EML - modulated laser, and the detector part adopts APD (Avalanche Photo-Diode) scheme with built-in CDR, which improves the performance of the module better, and the sensitivity is -22dBm after connecting the fiber. For EML lasers, the temperature is an important factor affecting the wavelength of emitted light. According to industry standards, the wavelength shift caused by each 1°C is less than 0.12nm; 10G SFP+ BiDi 80km optical module uses ADI ADN8833 plus software PID algorithm to control the laser temperature and ensure that the laser emits light stably.
