German OptiCON Project Aims to Increase The Capacity of Fiber Optic Networks by 10 Times

Abstract: ADVA (FSE: ADV) said it has participated in the OptiCON project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), to develop technologies that can increase the capacity of metropolitan and core fiber optic networks by 10 times.

ADVA (FSE: ADV) said it has participated in the OptiCON project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), to develop technologies that can increase the capacity of metropolitan and core fiber optic networks by 10 times. Other participants include Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI, Technical University of Munich and VPIphotonics.

OptiCON's work will explore areas such as unused spectra, new types of optical fibers, and novel transmission schemes in search of pathways to greater optical network capacity. ADVA said it would study the use of "advanced amplifiers" and "new transceivers" in this situation. The plan will also address monitoring and SDN control issues.

"This project is important," said Annika Dochhan, head of ADVA and OptiCON projects and chief engineer of advanced technology. "As light transmission approaches the Shannon Limit and the continued increase in speed per channel is gradually ending, we are looking for breakthrough methods to expand future network capacity. By using untapped spectrum, we can maximize the value of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) network and meet the rapidly growing data demands from the cloud video and mobile devices. OptiCON is committed to designing next generation of transport networks and enabling operators to keep up with the exponential traffic growth they faced. "
