How to Use 400G OSFP DR4 and SR4 Flat Top

400G OSFP DR4 and SR4 Flat Top are two types of optical transceivers that support 400 Gigabit Ethernet over four parallel lanes of single-mode or multimode fiber, respectively. They use PAM4 modulation to achieve a data rate of 106.25 Gbps per lane and have a flat-top OSFP form factor that can fit into a standard OSFP cage with a riding heat sink. They are compliant with IEEE 802.3bs and OSFP MSA standards.

To use 400G OSFP DR4 and SR4 Flat Top transceivers, you need to connect them to the appropriate fiber cables and network devices.

400G OSFP DR4 Flat Top

  • Connect a 400G OSFP DR4 flat top transceiver to another 400G OSFP DR4 transceiver over a 12-fiber MTP/MPO cable, for a maximum reach of 500 meters over single-mode fiber.
  • Connect a 400G OSFP DR4 transceiver to four 100G DR transceivers over a 12-fiber MTP/MPO to 4x LC duplex breakout cable, for a maximum reach of 500 meters over single-mode fiber.

Install the transceiver on the NVIDIA Mellanox QM9790 switch and connect it to the NVIDIA Mellanox MCX75310AA network adapter using MPO-12/APC. Ensure the transceiver is firmly inserted and the fiber connectors are properly aligned and secured. 400G OSFP DR4 Flat Top is an optical transceiver that supports 400G Ethernet and InfiniBand protocols over single-mode fiber. It has four parallel lanes of 100G-PAM4 modulation, each operating at 1310nm wavelength. This transceiver offers high-speed, low-latency, and scalable network performance for data center and cloud applications.

400G OSFP SR4 Flat Top

  • Connect a 400G OSFP SR4 Flat Top transceiver to another 400G OSFP SR4 Flat Top transceiver over a 16-fiber MTP/MPO cable, for a maximum reach of 100 meters over multimode fiber.
  • Connect a 400G OSFP SR4 Flat Top transceiver to two 200G SR4 transceivers over a 16-fiber MTP/MPO to 2x 8-fiber MPO breakout cable, for a maximum reach of 100 meters over multimode fiber.
  • Connect a 400G OSFP SR4 Flat Top transceiver to eight 50G SFP transceivers over a 16-fiber MTP/MPO to 8x LC duplex breakout cable, for a maximum reach of 100 meters over multimode fiber.

The 400G OSFP SR4 Flat Top (MMA4Z00-NS400) is a 400Gb/s single-port OSFP transceiver that supports both InfiniBand (IB) and Ethernet (ETH) protocols. It uses a single 4-channel MPO-12/APC fiber connector to achieve multimode parallel transmission over SR4.
The firmware of the transceiver can work with both InfiniBand and Ethernet protocols and it automatically detects the protocol of the switch that it is connected to. The OSFP shell has a flat-top design and it uses the cooling fins on the ConnectX-7 connector cage to dissipate heat. When it is linked to a 1:2 splitter fiber cable, it only activates two channels on the split end and reduces the speed to 200G and the power consumption accordingly.
